Termites, mainly workers in colony are major structural pests. According to the habits, these can be divided in to 3 different ecological classes:

Subterranean termites:

• Termite colonies that need contact with earth & normally dwell underneath building structures
• These can be identified by mud tubes (earthen tunnels) they construct or plastering on walls

Dry wood termites:

• They do not require soil contact to live & build colonies inside timber itself

Damp wood termites:

• They live in timber that has high moisture content

Termite enter building structures unnoticed from below & through soil, perforating the foundation and then spreading upwards through joints, crevices and cavities in floors and walls, lift veils and underground cabling. The first as well as sure sign of termite infestation is covered runways i.e. mud tubes/galleries between their nest & source of food. Subterranean termites are responsible for most of damages as well as economic losses worldwide. Their main source of food is wood, clothes, paper and books containing cellulose.
